Upload Speed Notes

Upload vs Download Speed

Many internet plans have a slower upload rate than download rate. Use the Upload result from a speed test.

500 Mbps down may provide only 50 Mbps up

Why Efficiency Matters

Protocol overhead, cloud throttling, Wi-Fi and disk read speed can reduce real upload performance.

90% Transfer Efficiency

Calculation Formula

Upload time is the file size in bytes divided by bytes per second after transfer efficiency.

time = size ÷ effective speed

How to calculate upload time

Enter the file size, your actual upload speed and a transfer-efficiency estimate. The calculator is useful for video uploads, cloud backups and large file transfers. Use the Upload result from a speed test, not only the advertised download rate.

Mbps and MB/s

Internet speeds commonly use Mbps while files use MB or GB. Since 1 Byte equals 8 bits, 20 Mbps has a theoretical maximum of about 2.5 MB/s.

Why real uploads take longer

Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi variation, cloud throttling, disk reads and competing traffic reduce real performance. The default 90% is suitable for a normal estimate; try 70%–85% on an unstable connection. Calculations stay in your browser.
