Standard Reference
KB / MB / GB
Decimal units are commonly used for drives, cloud storage and network transfer labels.
1 KB = 1,000 BKiB / MiB / GiB
Binary units are commonly used by operating systems and memory capacity, using powers of 1024.
1 KiB = 1,024 Bbit and Byte
Lowercase b means bit, uppercase B means Byte. Network bandwidth is usually measured in bits.
1 B = 8 bByte Converter Overview
The byte converter converts between bit, Byte, KB, KiB, MB, MiB, GB, GiB, TB, TiB and related units. It is useful for file sizes, bandwidth, storage capacity and development debugging.
How to Use
- Enter the value you want to convert.
- Select the source unit, such as Byte, GB or MiB.
- Review decimal, binary and bit-unit results.
- Click any result to copy one value, or copy the full conversion table.
KB vs KiB
KB, MB and GB are decimal units based on 1000:
1 KB = 1,000 B
1 MB = 1,000 KB
1 GB = 1,000 MB
KiB, MiB and GiB are binary units based on 1024:
1 KiB = 1,024 B
1 MiB = 1,024 KiB
1 GiB = 1,024 MiB
bit vs Byte
Lowercase b means bit. Uppercase B means Byte. 1 Byte equals 8 bits. Network bandwidth usually uses bits per second, while file sizes usually use Byte, KB, MB or GB.
Common Use Cases
- Convert file sizes, such as 1536 MB to GB or GiB.
- Estimate download speed by converting Mb to MB.
- Compare drive labels in GB with operating system values in GiB.
- Debug cache, logs, object sizes and transferred payloads.
FAQ
Why does a 1 TB drive show less than 1 TB in the operating system?
Drive vendors usually use decimal TB, while the operating system may show binary TiB, so the displayed number is smaller.
Are MB/s and Mb/s the same?
No. MB/s means megabytes per second, while Mb/s means megabits per second. 1 MB/s = 8 Mb/s.
